Our Story

About Freelance Numbers

Freelance Numbers was born from a simple frustration: why were freelancers and contractors forced to use generic calculators that didn't understand the unique challenges of independent work?

Our Mission

We believe every freelancer and contractor deserves access to professional-grade financial tools without paying enterprise prices. Our calculators are designed specifically for the independent workforce, accounting for irregular income, self-employment taxes, and the complexities of running your own business.

Why We're Different

🎯 Built for Freelancers

Every feature is designed with freelancers in mind. We understand quarterly taxes, irregular income, and the need for multiple rate structures.

🔒 Privacy First

Your financial data never leaves your browser. All calculations happen client-side, ensuring complete privacy and security.

💡 Educational

We don't just give you numbers. Each tool includes explanations, tips, and educational content to help you understand your finances.

🆓 Always Free

No subscriptions, no premium features, no hidden costs. Professional tools should be accessible to everyone.

Who Built This

Freelance Numbers is an independent project built by people who understand the challenges of independent work firsthand. We've been freelancers, run our own businesses, and dealt with the stress of setting rates, estimating quarterly taxes, and tracking runway on side projects. These tools exist because we needed them ourselves and couldn't find anything good that was actually free.

Why Trust Our Calculators?

📊 Real Data Sources

Our tax calculations use official IRS tax brackets, standard deduction amounts, and self-employment tax rates for the current tax year. We update these annually when the IRS publishes new figures. State tax rates are sourced from each state's department of revenue.

🔒 Client-Side Privacy

Every calculation runs entirely in your browser. Your financial data - income, expenses, tax details - never touches our servers. There's no database storing your numbers, no analytics tracking your inputs. You can verify this yourself: disconnect from the internet and the calculators still work.

⚙️ Transparent Methodology

Our calculators use the same formulas that accountants and financial advisors use. Self-employment tax is calculated on 92.35% of net earnings. Retirement contribution limits follow IRS Publication 560. Rate calculations factor in non-billable time, which most competing tools ignore.

⚠️ Honest Limitations

These are estimation tools, not tax preparation software. They provide useful ballpark figures for planning purposes, but they can't account for every deduction, credit, or special circumstance. We always recommend consulting a tax professional for filing decisions.
